According to the New York Times, the bureau is using technology to listen in on hundreds of millions of Facebook messages every day, and then sift through them for clues about potential threats.

In a statement, Facebook said the bureau has been tracking the communications of millions and the company has “identified a number of individuals who have been identified as having engaged in illegal activity.”

The FBI isn’t the only government agency attempting to gain a broad peek into people’s Facebook interactions.

Last month, the National Security Agency (NSA) obtained a warrant to track emails from the email account of the founder of an online security company, according to the Guardian.

The agency was also able to track a “massive” number of emails from a private server belonging to the founder.
