Russia has deployed a squadron of tanks to Ukraine’s east to help bolster its military, the country’s defence ministry said on Thursday.

The ministry said that the tank battalions, which have been stationed in a number of Ukrainian cities, are now patrolling near the border with Belarus.

The move comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a convoy of armoured vehicles to Crimea in March.

In recent months, the Russian military has been moving troops and equipment across the border, with the deployment of several battalions of Russian troops in Crimea a key escalation in the countrys conflict with Ukraine.
